IDEAS FOR EXPLORING THE SURROUNDINGS OF THE CASTLE BY BIKE

A great way to explore the Kozjansko Regional Park is by cycling, allowing you to visit numerous cultural attractions, scenic peaks, hills, valleys, and gorges ...

Within the park area, there are several well-maintained cycling paths as well as marked cycling routes. Outside of these, cycling is permitted on roads and maintained trails. Cycling in natural environments outside of settlements, all types of roads, tracks, and field paths, as well as forest and mountain trails, is not allowed with bicycles.

From Podsreda Castle to the Holy Mountains above Bistrica ob Sotli

From Podsreda Castle, you can walk or cycle along the marked and undemanding castle road, which leads all the way to the Holy Mountains above Bistrica ob Sotli. The idyllic route, just over nine kilometers long, follows the shady ridge of the Orlica hills, offering magnificent views of the Bistrica River valley and gorge, as well as the town of Bistrica ob Sotli.

The Orans Cycling Route

This 40-kilometer circular cycling route connects interesting natural and cultural attractions in the wider area of the Bistrica ob Sotli municipality.

The route starts in front of the municipal building in the center of Bistrica ob Sotli. It continues towards Polje pri Bistrici, then left along the Sotla River and climbs to the scenic St. Križ. From there, it descends through Srebrnik and then uphill past the Slomšek monument to Križan Vrh. This is followed by a descent to Podsreda and then an ascent to Podsreda Castle, from where you take the idyllic castle road to the Holy Mountains above Bistrica ob Sotli. The route continues towards Bizeljsko Castle, then above Orešje around Kunšperška Gora to the village of Kunšperk, and from there back to the starting point.

The length of the Orans Cycling Route is 40 km (approximately 4 to 5 hours) and is suitable for recreational cyclists (mountain bike recommended). The total elevation gain of the route is 960 m.

The route also offers three shortened variants (10 km or 24 km or 33 km), which are also suitable for families.

The Slovenian Transversal Mountain Bike Trail (STKP)

Our protected area is also part of the Slovenian Transversal Mountain Bike Trail (STKP), which bypasses all the major Slovenian mountain groups and measures about 1,800 kilometers. The trail is divided into 41 stages and passes 109 checkpoints, with a total elevation gain of about 50,000 meters.

Cyclists on the trail get to know the diversity of the Slovenian hilly landscape and numerous important points of mountaineering, folklore, and technical history. The trail runs along low-traffic side roads, field paths, forest tracks, and trails. It is not particularly technically demanding, but it can be strenuous in some places, and in some areas, you may need to push the bike or carry it, but not everywhere.

The 24th stage of the trail passes through Kozjanski Park. It starts in the center of Brežice, ascends through Pečice to Podsreda Castle, and then continues through Vetrnik towards the top of Bohor - to the Bohor Cottage.
